How Travel Planning Shaped My Approach to Living Well

They say life’s a journey, but let’s be honest—it’s also a logistical nightmare if you don’t plan it right.

You wouldn’t set off on a road trip without at least a vague idea of where you're going, a map, and maybe a playlist to keep you entertained. Yet, somehow, when it comes to life, many of us just expect things to fall into place without much forethought.

Ever tried to wing a trip and ended up stranded at a train station with a dead phone, no local currency, and an emergency snack stash dwindling at an alarming rate? Exactly. It turns out that planning a trip and planning your life have more in common than you’d think.

Just like travel, life requires direction, preparation, and the ability to roll with the unexpected. Here are five travel-inspired strategies to get your life itinerary on track.

1. Start with a Destination, but Stay Flexible

Every great trip begins with a dream—Paris in the spring, backpacking through Spain, a beach hut in Bali. But let’s be real: flights get canceled, the weather betrays you, and sometimes the best adventures happen when you take a wrong turn.

Life works the same way. Have a vision, set your goals, but don’t cling so tightly that you miss unexpected (and often better) detours. Maybe you wanted to be a diplomat but found your passion in travel writing. Maybe you planned to settle in one place but fell in love with life on the move. (I may or may not be speaking from experience here.)

The point is: leave room for surprises—they’re often the best part.

2. Travel Light

Ever dragged a massive suitcase up five flights of stairs in a European building with no elevator, or a broken one? (Speaking from experience again, of course). That’s what carrying unnecessary baggage in life feels like. The more you hoard—be it physical stuff, toxic relationships, or outdated ideas of success—the harder the journey.

Keep what serves you. Whether it's a well-packed carry-on or a carefully curated life, the key is knowing what’s essential.

Pro tip: Versatile pieces (a black blazer, a solid financial plan) are your best friends.

3. Budget, but Allow for Splurges

A well-planned trip has a budget, but it also has a little wiggle room for that unexpected Michelin-starred meal or the handmade leather bag you just have to bring home.

Same goes for life. Be smart with your finances—invest, save, and plan—but don’t forget to live. Some experiences are worth the splurge. Whether it’s a dream course, a spontaneous trip, or the perfect espresso machine, sometimes joy is the best ROI.

4. Plan for Delays and Detours

Missed flights, lost luggage, surprise road closures—travel teaches you that things will absolutely go wrong. But the seasoned traveler doesn’t melt down; they adapt.

In life, delays and detours aren’t failures, they’re just alternate routes. Didn’t get that promotion? Maybe there’s something better waiting. Relationship didn’t work out? Maybe it made space for one that will. Keep a cool head and a plan B (and sometimes C).

5. Enjoy the Journey, Not Just the Destination

You don’t book a trip to rush from one attraction to another without stopping to breathe (okay, some people do, but they need to chill). The in-between moments—the train rides, the café stops, the conversations with strangers—are where the real magic happens.

Same with life. You'll miss the best parts if you’re constantly racing to the next milestone. Soak in the moments, the detours, the lessons, and yes, the occasional mishaps.

At the end of the day, both travel and life are about exploration, adaptation, and a good dose of humor when things inevitably go sideways. So book the trip. Make the plan. But also, leave space for the unexpected—it’s where the best stories come from.

Because in the grand scheme of things, it’s not just about ticking off destinations or life goals—it’s about the memories made along the way. The missed trains that led to unforgettable conversations, the wrong turns that led to breathtaking views, the chance encounters that changed everything.  Life, like travel, isn’t meant to be perfectly scripted; it’s meant to be experienced.

So embrace the detours, laugh at the mishaps, and keep moving forward.
